With Night of Champions happening over the weekend, it’s only normal that I’m here this week with a review for you all! I know there was a lot of flak about this event happening on social media and how people were upset it was happening in Saudi Arabia. I’m not here to talk about that.
I’m here to talk about how impressed I was at the event. That massive screen was, for lack of a better word, impressive. Honestly, I was blown away. You know what else blew me away?
The crowd!!! It was like watching a live concert! Their energy level was infectious, pretty much rivaling the Europeans. They were loud 👏🏻, they sang along to all the songs 👏🏻, they chanted 👏🏻, and they cheered on everybody 👏🏻! Yes, for both the women and men! That’s all I needed to see.
Anyway, shall we get to the matches?
King of the Ring: Cody Rhodes vs Randy Orton
Prediction: Cody Rhodes
RESULTS: CODY RHODES
Thoughts & Rankings: 3.5/5
I loved seeing the pop to these two. If we’re being honest, I think that itself made the match. To hear everyone sing both songs so loudly and passionately was enough to get me hyped. I don’t hear that kind of passion in America (just sayin’).
I really wanted to see Randy win for the crown, at the same time, I’m not mad that Cody won. I really don’t know why I see so much hate for him online, but I personally like him. The match itself was fun and exactly how I thought it would go. The ending was a bit anti-climactic, but I’m not complaining.
Women’s Street Fight: Rhea Ripley vs Raquel Rodriguez
Prediction: Rhea Ripley
RESULTS: RHEA RIPLEY
Thoughts & Rankings: 4.5/5
I loved this match! It really showed that Raquel can wrestle, because I haven’t seen much of it since she’s joined WWE, despite what I keep hearing from people. These two, having a lot of history, it was really fun to see them take it all out over a street fight. Been a while since I’ve seen Kendo sticks being used so much, so I was loving that!
The move they did on the table at the end was crazy! So bloody dangerous! I was clutching my face, hoping that the table didn’t slip off, yes, even with the ref standing there holding it.
I also loved the barbed wires on Raquel’s outfit. Let’s be honest, both these ladies killed with their outfits on top of their match.
Sami Zayn vs Karrion Kross
Prediction: Karrion Kross
RESULTS: SAMI ZAYN
Thoughts & Rankings: 3/5
Before I get to the match, I just want to say that I loved Karrion’s entrance!! I gasped when Scarlet walked down, and then he popped up behind her. I’ve never actually seen his entrance like that before, so I thought that was so cool.
This match was interesting to me, in a way that it told more of a story than it was about action. I can see Sami wrestling with the ideas and words that Karrion has put in his head. Whereas with Karrion, it was cool to see him continue to play the demon on your shoulder. To me, it was like getting to act two of a movie where things dial back a bit and are more focused on character development. To me, that’s just interesting, but action-wise, it wasn’t as exciting, especially after just coming off a street fight.
Men’s US Champion: Solo Sikoa vs Jacob Fatu
Prediction: Jacob Fatu
RESULTS: SOLO SIKOA
Thoughts & Rankings: 4.5/5
I did NOT see Solo winning this one and becoming the new US champ! I thought Jacob would continue to hold onto the belt! But now things are interesting, especially if you watched the entire match. Solo looks like he’s regaining power and rebuilding the new Bloodline again. Annnnd he’s also hilarious, so I like him more now. I’ve always liked Solo since watching WWE, like Roman is cool and all, but something about the annoying younger brother or whatever trying to build something for himself and becoming the villain because of it is more interesting to me.
Anyway, any match with Jacob is going to be great. These two put on a great fight, and you just knew that shit was going to happen during the match. But never did I think Tonga Loa would be back!!! I thought he was long gone!
So this made me think Tama Tonga would also show up, because where the hell has he been? But nope, he didn’t show up. Instead, it was his brother! Tala Tonga?? Omg I’m going to get these guys mixed up so much LOL. This will definitely set up the long game, perhaps until War Games! I can see Jacob teaming up with the Usos. Where will Tama go? Will he stay with Solo when he’s back, or will he go hang out with Jacob?! I don’t know, but I’m here for the drama.
Queen of the Ring: Jade Cargill vs Asuka
Prediction: Asuka
RESULTS: JADE CARGILL
Thoughts & Rankings: 3/5
First off, OMG Jade coming out as Storm made me so happy. For those who have no idea, Storm is a character from X-Men. So just like how Robert Downey IS Tony Stark, Jade IS Storm.
Back to the match, this one was not as exciting as I thought it would be. Asuka was on point, but the finisher by Jade felt…off? I’m not mad at the result, I don’t hate Jade by any means, but I was still really hoping it was Asuka because she seems more interesting.
Story-wise, I think it makes sense, especially if you have Naomi holding the Money in the Bank briefcase. Having her cash in with Jade in the match would actually be perfect.
WWE Undisputed Champion: John Cena vs CM Punk
Prediction: CM Punk (Seth cash in)
RESULTS: JOHN CENA
Thoughts & Rankings: 5/5
And here we are, the main event. I didn’t expect this match to be as fun as it would be. Mainly because these two are, well, old. Their age is really showing (sadly), and it did start off pretty slow. But I would be lying if this was not the funnest match for me, because holy shit, it was entertaining and had me on the edge of my seat by the end of it.
This match brought everything: chaos, drama, and pure fun. I didn’t even know which way it would go. Either guy could have won this. My guess was that CM Punk would win and Seth would cash in. That obviously didn’t happen, but Seth DID show up. That caused quite the stir, then you had Penta show up?! I was so confused, but I’m here for it. I love Penta and now he’s been pretty involved with Seth’s crew, so it makes sense he shows up to try to thwart their cash in.
But then you had Sami show up too?! I’m now just like, “WTF is going on?!” but I loved every moment of it. You know when you’re overbooked and everything is chaotic, but somehow it just works? It was that!!
You also saw Cena breaking through that armour again. Like when he was against R-Truth and he almost broke. You saw moments of that again in this match against Punk. So many times I thought he would turn face, but he didn’t. The way the camera panned into his face after the hug, didn’t that bring back memories? LOL. I laughed so hard. Then he destroyed Punk and retained the belt. Honestly, I loved this. The match delivered (even if Punk fans aren’t into it).
The promos leading up to were also fire. Cena’s reverse pipebomb was epic, and Punk’s Thuganomics promo was hilarious. I do wish their beef went on a little longer, but I do get that Cena only has so many appearances left and there’s so much to do with him before he’s done.
I think this really sets this up for Summer Slam and even War Games. I’m certain that Cena will turn face before he hangs up his belt. But first, he must go through everybody. Seth will suffer a bit before he can truly cash in. Again, I’m here for the drama.
Outfit of the Night
Women’s: I’ll have to give this one to Jade Cargill showing up as Storm. I loved that so much!! I’ve been waiting for her to show up like her, and she finally did!
A constant win for me is Rhea, I loved her fit so much! And OMG, her makeup, I’m so inspired by it. I also need a pair of those pants, honestly. I’m not a huge fan that all the women have to be fully covered, but that aside, I do love how creative they get with their gear.
Men’s: I’ll give it to Sami Zayn. I loved that he showed up in his Muslim gear and had Palestinian colours on his pants.
A constant win for me is Cody. Those jackets are just hella cool and very well designed. Side note—he and Damien are just constantly the best dressed for me. Seth can be a hit or miss.
Saudi Delivered
Say what you want to say, I think Saudi delivered. The crowd sure as hell did. The event was also a lot of fun. It’s never perfect, but I really enjoyed it.
Another thing I want to point out. I do find it hilarious that you can tell jet lag is so real. For anyone that travels, jet lag is a bitch. And every time they go far and wide, you can see moments where someone messed up because they’re not fully adjusted to the time change. Remember Solo and Jey during the Euro tour? Here, you had a couple of fumbles that happened throughout the weekend. Honestly, I don’t blame them, they only have so many days to adjust because let's be honest, we ALL would fail. I travel a lot, and jet lag is always so real. Just something I want to point out because we gotta remember, wrestlers are people like us.
It would mean the world to me if you can help support my work by buying me a coffee. I know a monthly subscription is too much for most. 🥰🖤
So while I enjoyed this PPV, I did have a couple opposite takes (shuda done a double review at this point haha) including that I thought Smackdown deserves its flowers. Guilia's crowning moment should've been on the PLE if we're gonna start treating the US title more seriously. Hopefully she has a great run.
My fave match was Raquel vs Rhea. They've always had great chemistry in NXT, and I know once Raquel got out of the bodygruard character she'll shine. I also liked Cody vs Randy a bit more because it was a good clean, competative match.. which gets to my next point.
I'm feeling like things are overbooked lately. To the point that there's rarely any matches with 0 shenanigans, that the audience now expects some bloodline debut, surprise return, or interference every match or it's a let down. Case on point WM main event, it would've been nice to just get Cody vs Cena w no travis scott trying to outdo last year's main event. So hopefully their summerslam match is a clear winner.
For this reason, unfortunately I didn't enjoy Cena vs CM Punk. As it relied on so many parts to make it good, like you said, probably setting up war games. But to me, this rivalry is already so rich and do it one last time, I prefered the focus more to be on them having a definitive finish. Enjoyed the PPV, but hoping Evolution and summerslam realizes it's not always about the "shocking" moments.
